ABOUT NANBA

The North American Native Bankers Association (NANBA) is a non-profit association consisting of Indian-owned financial institutions that facilitate the delivery of credit, mortgage lending, small business lending and other financial services to Indian Country. Formed in 1998 for the purpose of strengthening and increasing the number of Indian-owned financial institutions in the United States and Canada, NANBA believes that Indian ownership of their own banks and financial institutions is the cornerstone for economic self-determination for Native communities.

There are presently 19 Indian-owned commercial banks in the U.S. and 2 in Canada. Of the 19 U.S. banks, nine are owned in whole or in part by a federally recognized Indian tribe. Eleven of the banks are located in Oklahoma. Though a relatively new development in the banking industry, Native American banks are performing quite well, with indications that their growth and maturation rates will continue to increase over time. NANBA seeks to facilitate there results through networking, education and support of tribally-owned institutions throughout the U.S. and Canada.

NANBA is the primary nexus for networking and informational exchange among the member banks. These are unique challenges and opportunities for Indian-owned and tribally-owned commercial banks in the U.S. and Canada. Our members greatly benefit from the informational exchange among members and in implementing special loan and deposit programs that facilitate the growth and profitability of our member banks.
